CAS is K to 12 ready - Valderama

With Dr. Julius S. Valderama at the helm, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) anticipates the impact of the K to 12 Program in 2016. Dean Valderama said that a number of the faculty will support K to 12 by teaching senior high school classes. Academic departments will continue to improve the curricular offerings in Mathematics, Information Technology, and Computer Science. Other teaching staff will pursue further studies, research and production.

Meanwhile, he added that Kt o 12 will result in an unavoidable trade-off. "Nearly all of the faculty will have normal teaching load in the new Academic Year (AY)," he said. However, with a reduction of required General Education (GE) units for the college and an expected record low of freshmen enrollees, CAS will have to bear the displacement of a few of the 26 Emergency Instructors (EIs) previously hired.

The Dean stressed that CAS has been readying for this necessary change. Proposals for new undergraduate programs in Communication Arts, Psychology, and Information Technology (Information Systems track) are in the offing. The college will also continue to extend development work in neighboring schools, agencies and communities through trainings.

Since his appointment on June 8, 2015, Dean Valderama admitted that this is one of the biggest changes he has had to tackle. Since it began in 1979, CAS has been a service unit in what was then the Nueva Vizcaya State Institute of Technology (NVSIT). The college continued to offer GE courses to all college freshmen and sophomores when the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) was chartered in 2004.

K to 12, implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd) in 2011, will affect the higher education curriculum. In their official website, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) indicated that the total GE load in college is trimmed from 64 down to 36 units. This means that K to 12 graduates who will go to college in 2018 and thereafter will have to spend only a year in GE classes.

As K to 12 is underway, CAS will still be accepting enrollees eligible for the freshman year in 2016 through 2018. High school graduates from old curriculum and from institutions that adopted the senior high school early will be accepted for enrollment. As of press time, NVSU's proposed August-May shift in the 2016 academic calendar is yet to be approved by the Board of Regents.
