Posted by: nathan | Date posted: May 31, 2023Over a thousand NVSU students taking the General Education Communication (GE COMM) subject this semester attended the first-ever writing seminar and workshop organized by the Arts and Languages Department of the College of Arts and Sciences, held on May 31, 2023, at the University Gymnasium with the theme "COMM-andment: Write Right!"
The seminar featured two informative lectures by experienced faculty members. Ms. Merlie M. Binay-An, EdD, shared her expertise in creating impactful research introductions, teaching participants the procedures and techniques to engage readers from the beginning of their research papers. Meanwhile, Prof. Josefina A. Sana, a former faculty member, gave a comprehensive lecture on writing the Review of Related Literature (RRL), offering tips on paraphrasing and summarizing skills. She guided students in conducting thorough literature reviews to avoid plagiarism and enhance the credibility of their academic work.
Representing the college dean, Dr. Lori Shayne A. Busa, who is currently on authorized leave, Prof. Fermila D. Cauilan, the department chair of Arts and Languages, inspired the participating students by emphasizing the importance of writing in academic and professional pursuits and as a foundation of all other fields.
One notable part of the workshop was when selected GE COMM students shared their writing outputs and reflections about the activity. These different perspectives showcased the students' understanding of the topic and appreciation of the activity.
NVSU's first writing workshop has paved the way for GE COMM students to excel in effective writing. By leveraging the expertise of experienced faculty members and creating a supportive learning environment, the workshop has empowered students to communicate their ideas clearly and confidently. This milestone event sets the stage for future workshops, demonstrating NVSU's commitment to fostering academic excellence among its student community.
