College of Arts and Sciences Marks 45 Years of Academic and Service Excellence

The College of Arts and Sciences celebrates its 45 years of existence as one of the pioneering colleges at Nueva Vizcaya State University in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, from September 23 to 27, 2024, at the NVSU Grounds, with the theme, “PangmalaCASang Samahan, komuniCASyon, at CASiyahan ng Kolehiyo ng Agham at Sining.”

CAS Honors Legacy

An ecumenical service was offered in the morning of Day 2 (Wednesday, September 25, 2024) for the academic community's collective worship, thanksgiving, and prayer for the college's rich history and recent milestones.

Speaking on behalf of University President Wilfredo A. Dumale, Jr., Dr. Elma P. Apostol, vice president for Academic Affairs, conveyed her warm congratulations to CAS and acknowledged the immense effort it took the college to achieve 45 years of excellence during her message at the opening program.

Meanwhile, as the resource speaker, Mr. Menardo C. Redulfin, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) alumnus, inspired the students by sharing his valuable experiences of struggles and triumphs from his time as a student at the university. He also reminded all attendees to continue to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to stronger bonds in the years to come.

CAS Lauds Stakeholders

Recognizing 45 years of public service and community impact, Dr. Lori Shayne Busa, college dean, and Assoc. Prof. Richard Taclay, this year’s anniversary director general, handed over certificates of recognition to retirees and former student officers in honor of their contributions and achievements that have sustained the college over the years.

The retirees who were honored and awarded tokens of appreciation included: Prof. Romana Dulnuan, former Culture and Arts director; Prof. Frances Belen, former Natural Sciences Department chairperson; Dr. Evelyn Taban, former faculty regent; Dr. Elizabeth Almanza, former Physical Sciences Department chairperson; and Prof. Abraham Blanco, former physics educator.

The student groups whose officers also received recognition and certificates were the following: CAS Student Council (CASSC), Association of Future Researchers and Biologists (AFRB), Analysts and Information Managers Society (AIMS), Computer Science Society (CSS), Future Information Technologists Society (FITS), and NVSU Mathematics Club.

Other college stakeholders, including university officials, guests, students, organizations, faculty and staff, retirees, alumni, and visitors, were present and actively participated as performers and spectators during the prepared series of performance activities.

CAS Flexes Talents and Skills

Capturing the hearts of the audience, selected faculty members and students brought humor to the celebration this afternoon, September 25, 2024, through their unique performances during the “Your Face Sounds Familiar” activity.

For the faculty category, the winners are as follows: 

  • 1st place: Mr. Redino Gumayagay and Anne Murray De Asis, Social Sciences and Humanities Department representatives
  • 2nd place: Ms. Myra Garing, Arts and Languages Department representative
  • 3rd place: Ms. Berns Liggayu, BSITIS Department representative
  • 4th place: Mr. Alvin Felix, Mr. Gerald Lobeban, and Mr. Dennis Acosta, SocSci & Hum Department representatives

The following prizes were awarded to the winning faculty members:

  • 1st place – Php3,000.00 and a gift certificate
  • 2nd place – Php2,000.00 and a gift certificate
  • 3rd place – Php1,000.00 and a gift certificate
  • Consolation prizes – Php500.00 and a gift certificate

In the student category, the winners are as follows:

  • 1st place: Jade Valdez, BSIT
  • 2nd place: Christian Mark Labuguin, BS Math
  • 3rd place: Jeff Nabulneg, BS Math
  • 4th place: Jeriza Cablin, BS CS
  • 5th place: John Reyco Tumacder, BS Bio

The student winners can expect to receive prizes and tokens once the necessary documents are prepared and submitted for claiming.

CAS teachers, retirees tour at Mushroom Resources Research Development Center

As part of the afternoon activities for Day 2 of the CAS Founding Anniversary Celebration, the faculty members from the college visited the Mushroom Resources Research Development Center, which is now under the directorship of Assoc. Prof. Daniel Marvin Ramel.

During the center tour, the faculty members and attending retirees had a glimpse of the different mushroom varieties displayed on racks and tasted some of the processed foods made from the mushrooms.

The weeklong founding anniversary incorporates a variety of academic and extracurricular activities suited to the interests and programs offered by the college and its future directions. The following is an overview of the scheduled activities for the anniversary celebrations:

  • Day 1: Youth Forum on Voter Awareness and Gender Sensitivity
  • Day 2: Opening Ceremonies, Center Tours, Performances
  • Day 3: Various Quizzing Games and Indigenous Games
  • Day 4: Sports Fest or PalaCASan Activities
  • Day 5: Awarding and Closing Program
